History
The Seminole area remained sparsely settled until the middle of the 20th century. At that time, persistent population growth in nearby St. Petersburg and Largo pushed out into then-unincorporated areas of Pinellas County. During the late 20th century, Seminole continued to develop as a retirement and tourist community. These days, it’s a noted bedroom suburb of St. Petersburg and a haven for tourists who wish to explore the nearby Gulf of Mexico beaches.
Geography
Seminole is located in Pinellas County, Florida. Depending on traffic conditions, it’s within a 30-minute drive of St. Petersburg and about 45 to 60 minutes from Tampa. Most of the city is developed with a mixture of low- and medium-density housing, but some commercial pockets exist along Highway 585. Despite its location in one of Florida’s most densely populated counties, Seminole has ample open space. Lake Seminole is the city’s most distinctive landmark.
Population & Demographics
Seminole has a population of about 17,000. Thanks to an influx of new arrivals from other parts of Florida and surrounding states, this figure has risen fairly rapidly in recent years. The city is popular with retirees, empty-nesters, and parents with young children as well as professionals seeking lower living costs and more property. Due to the presence of Lake Seminole and the proximity of the Gulf of Mexico, Seminole is also a popular tourist destination.
Things to Do in Seminole, Florida
Seminole has plenty of attractions for residents and visitors alike. The city’s most notable attraction is arguably its water tower, a whimsically painted structure that aroused a local controversy during the mid-2000s. Lake Seminole itself is popular with boaters and fishermen. Seminole City Park regularly hosts outdoor concerts and family-friendly activities. To the west, Madeira Beach, Redington Beach and Indian Shores offer endless opportunities for beach-goers and surfers.
Climate & Weather
Seminole’s climate is marked by hot, humid summers and pleasant winters. Frost and freezes are virtually unknown here, but sensitive plants may need indoor storage on the coldest evenings. Although temperatures above 100 degrees are rare as well, persistent humidity can make for oppressive summertime afternoons. Seminole occasionally experiences tropical storms, but run-of-the-mill afternoon thunderstorms are more common.
