Types of EV Charging Stations

LEVEL 1

Level 1 charging means plugging your vehicle into a standard 120-volt household outlet. No new circuit or installation is required, and the charging cable is typically included with your vehicle at purchase. The tradeoff is speed: Level 1 adds only 3 to 5 miles of range per hour, which works for plug-in hybrid vehicles with smaller battery packs but often falls short for full battery electric vehicles that need a complete overnight charge. It is the most affordable starting point, but most full EV owners move to Level 2 quickly.

LEVEL 2

Level 2 charging uses a dedicated 240-volt circuit, the same voltage that powers your dryer or air conditioner, and adds approximately 12 to 80 miles of range per hour depending on your vehicle and charger output. For most EV owners, this means a full charge overnight without giving it a second thought. It is available as a hardwired wall unit or as a NEMA 14-50 outlet that accepts a portable charging cable. Level 2 is the most practical and popular home charging solution for full battery electric vehicles. Florida building code requires a permit for all new 240-volt circuits and we handle the full permitting process as part of every installation. Many Florida utilities including FPL, Duke Energy, and TECO also offer rebates for Level 2 home charger installations.

LEVEL 3

Level 3 DC Fast Charging operates at 400 to 900 volts and adds 3 to 20 miles of range per minute, making it the fastest charging option available. Because it requires three-phase commercial power, Level 3 is not available through standard residential electrical service and is designed for commercial locations: gas stations, retail centers, parking garages, car dealerships, and fleet facilities. It is the right choice for businesses that want to offer fast charging as a customer or employee amenity. A NEMA 14-50 is a 240-volt, 50-amp outlet that lets you plug in a portable Level 2 charging cable. It gives you flexibility, useful if you switch vehicles or want to use the outlet for other purposes. A hardwired wall charger is permanently mounted and wired directly to the circuit, which is the cleaner installation for homeowners who want a dedicated setup. We install both and can help you choose based on your vehicle and preferences.

Yes. We install Tesla Wall Connectors and the dedicated 240-volt circuits they require. We also install NEMA 14-50 outlets as an alternative for Tesla owners who prefer a portable charging cable. For coastal and waterfront properties throughout Pinellas, Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte counties, including homes in Clearwater Beach, Siesta Key, Anna Maria, Tierra Verde, and Manasota Key, we use components specifically rated for salt air exposure.

Your electricity usage will increase, but it is predictable and manageable. Charging a typical EV from near-empty overnight on a Level 2 charger uses roughly 50 to 75 kWh depending on your battery size, approximately $7 to $11 at current Florida rates, which is significantly less than the equivalent cost of gasoline for the same distance. Many Florida utilities also offer off-peak EV charging rates that reduce costs further when you charge overnight.
