History

Palmetto is one of the oldest population centers in central Florida. The area was first settled during the mid-19th century, but commercial activity didn’t spread here until around the turn of the 20th century. By the 1920s, Palmetto was a thriving enclave with an economy rooted in farming and fishing. The advent of air conditioning and modern roads drew tourists and retirees to the region towards the end of the 20th century. However, Palmetto remains true to its working-class roots and now serves as a bedroom community for nearby Bradenton, Tampa, and St. Petersburg.

Geography

Palmetto is located near the mouth of the Manatee River. Its northwestern border abuts beautiful Terra Ceia Bay and includes miles of frontage on a stunning stretch of coastal marshland. The center of town is characterized by medium-density residential and commercial development. Major thoroughfares include U.S. Highways 19, 41 and 301. The much larger city of Bradenton lies just to the south. To the north, Tampa and St. Petersburg are both within easy driving distance.

Population & Demographics

Palmetto has a population of about 12,000 souls. This figure is increasing rapidly and looks poised to pass 15,000 within a decade’s time. Although the area is home to some snowbirds and retirees, it’s noted for its above-average concentration of young families and professionals seeking affordable housing and ample lot sizes. Many locals commute to Tampa, Bradenton or St. Pete on a daily basis.

Things to Do in Palmetto, Florida

Palmetto’s most noteworthy attractions include the Manatee River, a mile-wide estuary with rich fishing grounds and ample opportunities for boaters. It’s also close to Robinson Preserve, one of the area’s best places to spot native waterfowl. Shoppers love the Red Barn Flea Market in nearby Bradenton. The Palmetto Historical Park showcases the city’s early history and offers some insight into what life was like in the 19th century. The city’s Cinco de Mayo celebration is one of the region’s liveliest.

Climate & Weather

Like the rest of the central Florida Gulf Coast, Palmetto has a subtropical climate that shares characteristics with the tropical climate present farther to the south. The area experiences reliably hot and humid summers. Winters tend to be cooler and less predictable, but frosts and freezes are virtually unknown here. Tropical storm activity does increase during the late summer and early fall months, but direct strikes are rare.
