History
Gulfport was one of the first communities to be settled in the St. Petersburg area. In fact, the town has supported a post office and other commercial outposts since the late 19th century. Although it flourished as a satellite city of nearby St. Petersburg, it steadily became known as a destination in its own right. By the late 20th century, Gulfport had a reputation as an artist-friendly town with a large population of retirees. It’s now largely built out and boasts a strong, stable community.
Geography
Gulfport is located immediately to the west of St. Petersburg. It faces the beach side communities of St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island across a wide lagoon. Although the city itself is quite densely populated, its ample water frontage provides tremendous amounts of open space for local residents. Major thoroughfares in the area include U.S. Highway 19 and Florida Highway 93.
Population and Demographics
Gulfport has a year-round population of about 12,000. This figure increases slightly during the winter months as snowbirds return from their primary residences. However, Gulfport’s overall headcount hasn’t increased much since the 1990s. In addition to seasonal residents and retirees, the area has a notable concentration of young families and professionals who appreciate its low cost of living.
Things to Do in Gulfport, Florida
Gulfport’s signature attraction is Art Walk, a twice-monthly celebration that showcases local artists’ work. Pinellas National Wildlife Refuge stretches out to the west, attracting boaters in search of rare birds and water animals. Twin Brooks Golf Course is popular with golfers of all skill levels. Baseball fans enjoy easy access to Tropicana Field, home of the Tampa Bay Rays.
Climate and Weather
Like much of the rest of Central Florida, Gulfport has a mild, almost tropical climate. Its winters are typically wet and mild. Hard frost is a once- or twice-per-decade occurrence. Summers tend to be hot and humid, but temperatures rarely exceed 100 degrees. Afternoon thunderstorms are common at any time of year. Although hurricane season technically runs from June through November, direct strikes are rare at any time of year.
